Airports around the world are owned by different kinds of authority, but usually have some kind of government control. In Britain the British Airports Authority owns and runs Heathrow to ensure among other things that air traffic is kept flowing quickly and in an orderly manner and that air travel is both safe and efficient. Since its first flight on the 1st January 1946 to the present day, Heathrow airport has grown from a small village with a few airlines flying to just eighteen destinations to the world’s busiest airport with over ninety airlines serving approximately 160 destinations around the world.

Getting to Heathrow by Rail

Wherever you begin your journey travelling to and from Heathrow airport by train is easy, swift and comfortable. The 450 million pound Heathrow Express rail-link connecting Heathrow Airport to London Paddington has been designed and constructed to provide a fast and frequent rail link of superior quality taking just 15 minutes journey time and leaving at 15 minute intervals. Paddington was chosen as the preferred terminus due to its existing Railtrack corridor to a point west of Hayes station.Upgrades and improvements were, of course, required to the existing track in order to carry the new rolling stock and the only new part of track required was a branch connecting Hayes to the airport.

The project consisted of a new high speed junction and flyovers ,a short section of new ballasted track, and new tunnels taking the branch line underneath the M4 motorway and main runways, beneath the central terminals, and on to Terminal 4. Heathrow is connected to the national and local rail network by four Railair coach/ bus services providing express services between four stations: Woking, Reading, Watford and Feltham. You can purchase a combined rail and coach ticket from most stations. Speedy and streamlined, you'll hardly feel you've broken your journey.
